Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national and international movement to create safe, convenient and fun opportunities for children to bicycle and walk to and from schools. PEAC has been a strong proponent in both Michigan and in Washington, DC for the the inclusion of students with disabilities in SRTS activities, as well as for a dedicated funding stream for students with disabilities within the federal SRTS programming. Unfortunately, students with disabilities are not routinely considered in SRTS planning efforts, despite the fact the students with disabilities are greater risk for developing chronic diseases and social isolation than their peers. PEAC believes that all SRTS programs should be fully inclusive and accommodate the needs of students with disabilities from the onset.
PEAC has been contracted by Woodland Meadows in Saline, Michigan during the 2010-2011 school year to assist in making Woodland Meadows Safe Routes to School program fully inclusive. Funding for this work is provided by the Michigan Safe Routes to School Program.
