PEAC’s active transportation initiative is a ground breaking project for students with disabilities. In October of 2010, PEAC received federal funds (JARC/New Freedom) to implement an innovative new program which will integrate active transportation mobility training into the curriculum of three special education programs.  PEAC is working with young adults, ages 16-26, enrolled in transitional training programs at Jo Brighton Center (Wyandotte Public Schools, Wayne County),  Visions Unlimited (Farmington Hills Schools District, Oakland County), and the Robert Lutz Center (Macomb Intermediate School District, Macomb County).  Students are receiving training over the course of three years to acquire the skills needed for active transportation. Students will learn pedestrian and cycling skills, as well as fixed route and safety training.  PEAC is working with  teachers, parents, staff and students to both meet the unique needs of students in these three programs, as well as to develop model programming that can be utilized by programs around the state and country.
